WHERE AND WHEN
Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia: Whale shark season runs from March to July, peaking in April–May. Exmouth and Coral Bay are the main departure points.
Ningaloo Reef is one of the few places in the world where you can predictably swim with these giants every year. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are the largest fish in the world, but completely harmless to humans — they feed exclusively on plankton.
Excursions generally last half a day. A specialist guide dives with you. Basic snorkelling ability is required.
